Representing Romania at the 2020 Oscars

Not everything is as it seems for Cristi, a police inspector in Bucharest who plays both sides of the law.   Embarking with the beautiful Gilda on a high-stakes heist, both will have to navigate the twists and turns of Romanian corruption, treachery and deception.

“The dirty-cop trope gets an imaginative new workout in this sly and intricate crime drama by the director Corneliu Porumboiu.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker

“Poromboiu has always been the funniest of the Romanian new wave directors, albeit with a bitter twist and deliberately rough delivery.   Here, clearly reveling in the constraints of genre convention, he delivers pure entertainment.” – Stephanie Bunbury, The Age (Australia)

“An elegant and stylishly crafted piece of entertainment.” – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

Language: Romanian, English, Spanish (English subtitles)

Length: 1 hr. 37 min.

Before starting to watch, some helpful information:
The story makes use of Silba Gomero, a little-known “whistling language” that has been used for thousands of years on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands.

The Whistlers has a complex plot, so pay close attention.   Without giving away plot, it may help you to be aware of the use of flashbacks to prior events in Bucharest.
