Italian director Pietro Marcello follows his dramatic breakthrough Martin Eden with an enchanting period fable, beginning as the tale of a sensitive brute who returns home from World War I to his rural French village and his baby daughter.  The film blossoms into a portrait of the daughter as a young woman, delicately interweaving realist drama, ethereal romance, and musical flights of fancy.
