Based on the true story of Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins) and the unlikely romance between Maud and a hardened reclusive bachelor, Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke).
Maud Lewis lived in a house so tiny that today it sits comfortably inside a room at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Sally Hawkins creates a warm, humane performance of a woman who, growing up in the early years of the last century, might have been labeled a cripple, and perhaps “funny.”
“A portrait of a woman in thrall to art and nature and a couple whose love resisted hardship and defied definition.” – Peter Howell, Toronto Star
“This is a painter whose canvas was her life, and whose life her canvas. MAUDIE is a magnificent celebration of both.” – Chris Knight, National Post
“Sally Hawkins is perfection.” – Rex Reed, New York Observer
“In deft camera strokes — and lit up by Sally Hawkins’ remarkable performance — it paints a keen picture of one woman getting by, and two people staying married in a backwater nook where comforts are few and far between.” – Brian Gibson, Vue Weekly
