This film is not to be missed, whether you are familiar with the artist Josep Bartoli or not.
The film is a touching, exquisitely rendered animated drama/history/biography in which a dying gendarme recalls his encounter with the Catalan artist Josep Bartolí in a French concentration camp after the Spanish Civil War.
Bartolí’s Goya-esque drawings of his time in French concentration camps inspired the film’s director Aurel, himself an acclaimed press illustrator and cartoonist. The film serves as a sharp reminder of the ignominious fate of some of the 500,000 Spanish refugees fleeing Franco’s anti-fascist forces in early 1939, and it also highlights the power of drawing to bear witness.
“Emphasizing the saving power of art and of the spirit of resistance within a hostile environment, JOSEP echoes the words of its protagonist perfectly: “beautiful ideas, if they do not meet a beautiful person, they become death.” – Cineuropa
