Directed by Jia Zhang-Ke (we showed his previous two films, A Touch of Sin and Mountains May Depart).
ASH IS PUREST WHITE begins by following the quick-witted Qiao and her mobster boyfriend Bin as they stake out their turf against rivals and upstarts in 2001 postindustrial Datong before expanding out into an epic narrative of how abstract forces shape individual lives in 21st-century China and its warp-speed transformations.
“No one makes movies like Mr. Jia does. He’s a dramatist with the eye of a documentarian and the instincts of a historian, even a geographer. But he’s also a romantic poet, and his heroine… is driven by love as far as it can take her.” – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
“…exquisite and ferocious…” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
“Once again spotlighting a superb performance by his longtime creative partner and wife Zhao Tao, Jia’s vision makes for a heady brew of love, loss, and loneliness over three time frames that coincide with huge changes in China.” – Robert Abele, The Wrap
“Do not be gulled by the slow pace of Jia’s stories; they are ceaselessly alive to his country’s haste, as it rushes to erase and to construct, and his sympathies tilt to those uncertain souls who simply can’t keep up.” – Anthony Lane, New Yorker
